4 Reasons You May Need to Seek Prescription Glasses

Blog

There are so many reasons why people choose to have prescription glasses. Some people have different prescription glasses to help them with different sight problems. Need to get glasses yourself? Here are the 4 major reasons that should underline your need for prescription lenses.

General sight improvements

For most people, their need for glasses is derived from the basic need to improve eyesight. This can be as a result of eye damage, disease, birth defects or exposure to harmful environments such as too much lighting or the vice versa.

By far, the most common general reasons that lead people to seek prescription glasses are nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. These are the types of prescription glasses that suit the general purpose and can be worn anywhere unless instructed otherwise by an optometrist.

Special use

In some cases, one pair of prescription glasses cannot suit all of your eyesight problems. In such cases, an optometrist can prescribe special purpose glasses that will aid in certain tasks. Examples of special use glasses include reading glasses to help with near sightedness, driving glasses to help with either near or far sightedness, as well as computer glasses to reduce eye strain. Special use glasses can also be used by people without any underlying eyesight condition. In such a case, the glasses serve to prevent permanent eye damage or strain.

Sportswear glasses

Sportswear glasses are another broad category of prescription glasses. Unlike formal glasses used at work or when reading and driving, sportswear glasses have to be designed with a whole new environment in mind. For one, sportswear glasses have to be durable enough to withstand falls or minor hits during use. Second, they have to offer a tight fit to avoid movement during use. Third, they are lightweight to avoid causing strain or skin wear when in use.

Cosmetic glasses

Lastly, one can also get cosmetic glasses to simply accentuate their facial appearance. While cosmetic glasses look like any other pair of glasses, they do not have any visual effect of the user. In some cases, cosmetic glasses may have some added effects such as reduced glare. However, even when getting cosmetic glasses, it's important to see an optometrist to ensure the lenses in question are not affecting your sight in any way.

Form the above categories, you should be able to figure out where you lie and the type of glasses you need. Once done, you can start to evaluate the types of lenses you'd like, the type of frames to go with and other design features for your glasses.
